Cancer genetics is an expanding area of genetic medicine. Many individual and families may wish to seek advice in a variety of contexts, often to assess their risk of having an inherited cancer predisposition or to decide on the relevance of cancer gene testing. Not infrequently this may be in the context of planning a family, to know how a family history impacts on the risk of a child inheriting such a disorder or to consider the options where a genetic diagnosis exists, such as using PGD to avoid transmission of genetic susceptibility.
